Today’s topic is a fairly important subject I would love to share with you. For most of my career, I have had athletic trainers, doctors, and coaches to guide me in the direction of making sure I was healthy so I could perform at my best. But now that I am well and truly out of University, I have nobody to really tell me what to do, instead, I have to do it all on my own – which is so strange to me!
The most important element to being in more in tune with your body and mind is actually listening to what you really need. Sounds a bit cliche, I know, but it’s certainly one of the most important things you can do. And I’m not just talking about just recognizing what’s wrong but making time to improve whatever it is going on. Okay, yes I know I sound like a bit of broken record to be completely honest, but if you can take just one thing away from this post, it is, listen to your body beautiful!
I wanted to share with you some of my focus points I have for this year each stemming from different issues I’ve faced throughout the last couple of years. As most of my friends and family would know I have been quite the active girl ever since I can remember. It wasn’t until 2017 where I decided to take a little bit of a break from basketball – which involved 7 days of strenuous exercise to literally nothing.
During this break, I noticed my body changing quite dramatically. I lost A LOT of weight (the majority of it muscle) and my appetite suddenly became almost non-existent. I say that lightly because ya girl can eat but in comparison to what I use to eat – it was far from the norm! Initially, I was quite embarrassed about my appearance because I use to get all kinds of text messages, DM’s or phone calls from people asking me if I was unwell but the truth was NO. My body had just decided to transform itself a little more drastic than I imagined. From that point on my stress levels started to increase, I was so consumed by negative thoughts and I became so self-conscious!
From there my tolerance for certain foods started to become a health issue, that is, what I use to consume quite well suddenly made my stomach hurt pretty bad. It got to a point where some nights it became so painful that finally ENOUGH was ENOUGH – I had to make changes to my diet. Alright, I’m not talking about one of those vegan diets, but I started focusing more attention on very specific ingredients of food such as; the amount of salt and sugar I was eating, types of seasonings I added, types of vegetables, meat (which I cut out A LOT), almond milk or soy milk (I rarely drink milk anyway), herbal teas… the list goes on. Thankfully, I have a strict health-minded husband who encouraged me to change my diet so the change wasn’t all that bad to get used to.
Since the change, I have been able to maintain a consistent weight which has been quite a refreshing thing because my shopping trips have become less stressful! But with the diet change came some pretty significant issues with my vitamin intake and iron levels – things I never really thought about until well now. For years I have suffered from quite an awful immune system – something I am certainly not happy with but I’ve had to focus on specific food groups and tablets to improve it. With that comes the lethargic feeling and fatigue which to be completely honest some days I just don’t feel my best at all. But with sacrifice and the effort I am putting forth, I know IT WILL GET BETTER.
Okay, this one is a bit of a personal issue but I have been suffering from quite bad skin and dark circles under my eyes. Each is treatable so I am not at all worried but there were days I just wanted to hide – especially having dark circles under my eyes. I don’t believe in wearing makeup to hide blemishes or using a contour stick to hide the circles because that’s just a cop-out for me (sorry to be so blunt). But I kept trying to force myself to hide behind the makeup rather than finding out exactly why these issues were consistently occurring. One piece of advice is to see a doctor first then start experimenting on different skin care or home remedies to improve your natural skin.
To be fair, whenever my body went into a sort of challenging time so did my motivation level to want to look my best or even work on my blog – I know what a shocking attitude to have! I lacked positive energy which for any relationship/friendship is such an annoying toxic thing you just want to get rid of. I say this in almost all of my blogs but YOU are so important and so is your health. If I could change one thing about myself, I would like to be more selfish in a sense of taking care of myself more than others. I love making people happy and I would do anything for anybody, really I would, but there comes a point in your life when enough is enough before it’s too late to fix it all. This is a reminder. Take baby steps each day on bettering yourself. It’s totally worth it – I promise.
