Why I Love Washing Day: Pet Peeves and Strange Habits

Okay, I have a confession to make. I am one of those weird women who get excited about washing clothes. I don’t know about you but washing day just automatically motivates me to clean the entire apartment top to bottom – which has to be done anyway. To be honest, there is no better feeling than sleeping in freshly scented sheets or pouring all of your clothes on the bed and laying there amongst the heat absorbing the feeling and scent of fresh clothes – shhh don’t judge me!

Today’s post is quite a short one because well there’s not much to really share about how to wash clothes. I didn’t want it to end up being a “how to wash your clothes” post because that would be such a waste to talk about *giggle,* so here’s just some of the most interesting things I could possibly share about myself with you on this super exciting day of mine.

In a typical week of ours, I really have no set day of when I wash, I think it’s when we run out of items that I decide okay it’s coming up to wash day. However, currently, while we live overseas our apartment complex has a rule of designated wash days for each apartment flat. For us it’s every 9 days, so actually today is wash day for us – yay! Initially, I thought it was an absolutely ridiculous idea but it has done a world of good for us! As athletes we go through a tone of washing – I know so many of you can relate to this! But we have learned to manage what we wear and I don’t mean wearing our underwear twice in a row (gross!) but you get my point.

Now that I got that out of the way, I can share with you one of my absolute pet peeves. I don’t know whether your partner has this issue but I cannot stand when I cannot find the matching pair to our socks. I have this weird obsession of making sure each matching sock is in our wash basket before I put a load on. Why? I cannot stand finding dirty socks in sports bags or around the house after I’ve just washed – it really gets under my skin. Also, I really hate losing things, so I feel way better-knowing everything is grouped together – strange I know. The same goes for after I wash. I group the socks together like any normal human being would not throw them in a drawer hoping to find the other sock another day – that does not work for me! But I applaud those who have the patience to do so.

Anyways, back to the washing part. I think I have a bit of OCD when it comes to the particular fragrances we use. I love a clean scent that isn’t overpowered by perfume. However, I would like it to have some sort of fruity or vanilla hint to it – sounds complicated I KNOW.  But here comes the fun part. My OCD kicks in when it comes time to wash. I must always have a fabric softener and/or washing beads, the main detergent and of course dryer sheets. If I am missing one, I feel a little out of sorts.

I then start pairing towels with each other, linen, sports clothes together, and underwear/socks. I think I am more particular with the detergent than I am of the color combination thing like whites with whites and color grouping. Thanks to the updated high technology machine we have here at our apartment you can actually adjust the settings to get the same thorough wash but it protects the colors from running – fancy aye!

For years my family never really used a dryer, well actually it somehow always use to blow up because we used it so much. But now that I am overseas I LOVE my dryer. However, I tend to like to hang out clothes we have newly purchased and/or check the tag and adjust the dryer settings. It’s just super convenient especially on the days you need to get something dry as quickly as possible, for my husband most of the time it’s workout gear. Oh, FYI the anti-wrinkle setting is my friend because my husband is a little bit obsessed with ironing his clothes and we don’t have an iron currently – what a shame.

Well I hope you enjoyed this quick post.  Let me know what kind of tips or pet peeves you have regarding wash day. It could be that you iron your underwear – which is something I applaud you too for doing or that you simply dislike wash day let me know!

Hi Kiara. Yep, I am a male (as you know) and do probably about 97% of the washing in our household, and have pretty well from when Terri-ann and I married 20 years ago. She tended to lump everything together whereas I would separate undies and towels from shirts and pants/socks, so she said “Fine, you can wash”. The idea of a specific washday in European apartments is quite common and had been around for ages. Back in Germany, Mum recalled a similar thing before she migrated out to Oz in 1957. Keep up the great work and achievements. ♡

Wow! That’s amazing. I think it’s so interesting that you have that role… although it doesn’t matter specifically who washes to be honest. Thank you so much for your comment and support!
